3. Apply the 80/20 Rule to Everything

 

The 80/20 rule states that 20% of your activities will impact 80% of your results. Here are some tips on how you can apply this rule to everything. 

  • Before starting anything, ask yourself: “Is this task in the top 20% of my activities or bottom 80% of my activities?”
  • Find that 1 task that’s worth the other tasks combined- this is the frog you must eat first because this is the most important and complex task. It’s the task you are most likely to procrastinate on.
  • Remember, your ability to choose between what’s most important and unimportant plays a vital role in determining your success in life and work.

 

4. Consider the Consequences

 

When we consider the consequences of our actions, we tend to make better decisions in the present in the long run. If we apply the same rule to our tasks and prioritize, we can easily weigh which tasks are more important. Consider asking yourself the following questions: 

  1. What are the potential consequences of doing this work? Is it worth taking the risk?
  2. Which activities have the highest value?
  3. What can I do, and only I do that, if done well, will make a real difference? 
  4. What’s the most valuable way to use my time right now?

 

5. Apply Creative Procrastination 

 

Procrastination is usually considered a bad habit.  Procrastination has a negative connotation because it’s thought that we are putting things off and waiting until the last minute.  But there’s a lot more to it.  As a matter of fact, to tell you the truth, procrastination has some positives.  Creative procrastination in particular we are able to prioritize better and focus.  Then we are able to allow our thoughts to manifest and mature.  

Let’s be honest, we’ve all procrastinated about something.  The main difference between a high performer and a low performer is determined by what they choose to procrastinate. Here’s a rule of thumb to apply to your work,

Key Rule: You should only procrastinate on things that are low value to you. This way, you can dedicate more time to the things that are of high value to you.

6. Use ABCDE Method 

 

The ABCDE method helps you prioritize items based on their importance. This method is good for evaluating your task list.

  • “A” tasks are the tasks that you must do
  • “B” tasks are the tasks that you should do
  • “C” tasks are the tasks that are nice to do. You probably want to do them, but there are no consequences if you don’t do them
  • “D” tasks are the things that you delegate to someone so that you have more time for your “A” tasks.
  • “E” tasks are the things that you should eliminate from your to-do lists. These are the tasks you don’t want to do and there’s no value to delegate these tasks to someone else.

7. Focus on Your Key Result

 

You should focus on your key results because these are the areas you should be putting most of your skill and energy into. Being able to define where you want to be will help evaluate what tasks you should focus on. Here are five simple steps for you to reach your key results. 

Step 1: Define your goal and break it down to “results” 

Step 2: Highlight a key result or outcomes that contribute most to your goal

Step 3: Ask yourself, “What is something I really excel at?” 

Step 4: Create a guide or to-do list around your key skill to achieve key results

Step 5: Check your guide to ensure you’re on the right track

You can have multiple key results, so it’s important to pick one to focus on. This will ensure you don’t multitask, get distracted, or be overwhelmed. Remember, the golden rule when you eat that frog is to start with what has the highest value! 

8. Apply the Law of Three

 

The Law of Three is based on the idea that you should only focus on three tasks. I know that it sounds like you’ll never put a dent on your long to-do list. But let’s be honest, how many of those do you actually get to tick off at the end of the day? 

You should focus on three tasks for the day that amounts to 90% of your contribution. Tackle these first because they would have the highest value to you. It will increase your productivity, decrease procrastination and feeling overwhelmed. 

In the end, you will have more time for your family and yourself. Remember, success is based on time management. So, work on quality tasks in order for you to have more quality time with loved ones.

9. Prepare for Your Work Before You Start Working on It

  • What is something I want to work on, and why?

It will be difficult, and you might feel a bit down – but don’t worry, these are growing pains! This is a stepping stone for you to get better and be more successful. 

14. Find Your Motivation

 

Finding your motivation can be difficult, but it boils down to what you want to achieve and if you’re truly hungry to eat that frog. 

The most common way to motivate yourself is to apply pressure. You know yourself best, so put enough pressure to push you to finish those tasks without feeling overwhelmed. It could be as lenient as setting a deadline a week from now or highly encouraging with hourly deadlines. 

Putting pressure on yourself is one type of motivation, but it doesn’t necessarily work for everyone. It’s important to find what works for you, which is dependent on finding what drives you to be better at work and person overall. 

15. Make the Most of Your Personal Powers

 

I know it sounds weird, but we do have our own special powers. We have our special capabilities and skills we’re really good at, but we also have a time in our day that we work best. We can make the most of our capabilities and finish tasks if we’re able to find the most productive time. Here are a few tips to help you out with your personal powers.

  • Identify the period of highest mental and physical energy 
    • You can do this by noting it down on your schedule 
    • Once you find your optimal work time, do your important tasks during this period
  • If you feel tired or overwhelmed from your workload
